Acupuncture can be very helpful to you in all the stages of pregnancy. It is completely safe when carried out by a qualified and experienced professional. As well as being extremely useful for calming anxiety, it can also help with some specific symptoms.
Acupuncture is very helpful during the first few months of your pregnancy, when you may be experiencing symptoms such as morning sickness and tiredness.
A study published in the December 2009 investigated the effects of acupuncture on severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. 97% of the women treated with acupuncture showed significant improvements after 7 days, whereas only 47% benefited from drug treatment with luminal.
Second & third trimesters
During the midterm of pregnancy, acupuncture is very beneficial in relieving symptoms such as back pain and sciatica, or digestive problems.
If your baby is in Breech position, moxa-therapy is an effective and safe treatment that can be used to correct your baby’s position.
For pregnant women who are overdue, acupuncture can be used to help encourage labour.
A 1998 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association gave 130 women moxa-therapy and the other 130 no treatment. After two weeks of moxa-therapy, 98 children (74.8%) had turned to the correct position compared to 62 children (47.7%) in the group without moxa-therapy. In 2001, a study published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine found that starting treatment earlier gave a higher rate of success. 92.5% of the babies turned to the correct position after they were treated with moxa-therapy.
“I had regular acupuncture throughout my pregnancy. It helped to relieve some early nausea and I was otherwise very well for the duration. I ended up being overdue but was adamant I did not want to be medically induced. Instead, I had more acupuncture and went into labour naturally after the second session.”
